ABSTRACT |
Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar is a novel about a teenager’s mental
illness and the failure of the medical treatments she undergoes. In this
paper, I have analyzed the role of colours during her disease and how
they change as she gets worse. The main character’s personality as well
as her relationships with the rest of the characters is presented
through colours that stand for specific symbols. In the first half of
the novel, colours are striking, as if she felt bombarded by discordant
situations that are the cause of her illness; whereas in the second
half, colours are more neutral and alienating, showing the critical and
irreversible state of her depression.
