SUMMARY:

Cultural diversity has been for years a most debated issue in
contemporary academia. The nine essays included in this volume aim to
contribute to the ongoing debate, narrowing its scope, and serving as an
introduction to the topic in the specific context of Great Britain and
English-speaking North America. The first four essays offer a
fascinating insight into key features that characterise English as
spoken in the areas noted. Each of them deals with a different
linguistic field, although they are all intimately related, and the
order in which they appear somehow evidences the productivity of the
differences between the varieties of English analysed. The remaining
essays are linked by their focus on the encounter between cultures
brought about by the experience of migration, which accounts for much of
the diversity currently found in the aforementioned areas. Thus, they
all offer critical appraisals of different, though in many respects
related, cultural phenomena and/or cultural forms -be they in the
British, Canadian or US context- in order to reveal the problematic
situation of specific social groups and related subcultures, as well as
their relation to their country's dominant discourses.
